In the ongoing cultural debate over the appropriateness of legal abortions, those who support a woman’s right to choose how to best manage her pregnancy prefer to be called “pro-choice,” and refer to those who oppose them as “anti-choice.” Those who do not support legalized abortion prefer to be called “pro-life” and refer to those who oppose them as “anti-life.” How does adopting one set of terms or the other frame the issues of debate differently?

What will be an ideal response?

Each of those sets of terms frames the discussion in distinct ways. Adopting pro-
choice/anti-choice focuses the discussion on the woman and her right to choose what is
appropriate for her body against the state intervention in her choice. The pro-life/anti-life focus
frames the debates on life (presumably the life of the fetus), and characterizes those who do not
support the pro-life discussion as against life.
