How would C.B.'s nutritional needs be met?
What will be an ideal response?
Obtain a consult with a registered dietician as needed. Nasogastric or gastric tube feeding should
be instituted early and slowly. A high calorie, high protein diet is recommended to reduce muscle
wasting and assist with respiratory weaning. Continuous enteral feedings seem to be better
tolerated than bolus feeding in these patients. He would receive the continuous tube feeding until
he is able to swallow again. His intake and output and laboratory results will be strictly monitored,
and he should be weighed daily.
