Lethal injection is the most common method of execution used within the United States. The execution protocol in most jurisdictions authorizes the use of three drugs. The inmate is strapped onto a gurney, and an IV is started. At the warden’s signal the three chemicals are injected. The most common problem with lethal injection is collapsing veins and the inability to properly inject a vein. Electrocution is also a method of execution within the United States. Within most jurisdictions, the electric chair is a wooden chair with restraints and connections to an electrical current. The offender is placed in the chair and secured to it. A leg piece and head piece with a sponge and electrode are attached, and the offender’s face is concealed. The current is then sent through the offender’s body. The most common problems include burning of the offender’s body and the use of repeated shocks to cause death. The execution by lethal gas occurs in a steel airtight chamber equipped with a chair and restrains. The inmate is restrained to the chair and locked into the chamber. A container under the chair releases cyanide into the chamber. Unconsciousness can occur within a few seconds if the prisoner takes a deep breath. However, if the offender holds his breath to prevent breathing in the cyanide, he usually goes into wild convulsions. The most common problems encountered with the gas chamber are the agony suffered by the inmate due to the length of time to cause death.
