Sociocultural theorists view knowledge as socially constructed. Learning is mediated by language and interaction during tasks designed to be in the child's Zone of Proximal Development. Both constructivism and sociocultural theory emphasize communication, use of concrete materials as tools and collaborative learning. Constructivism places more emphasis on the individual child's construction of knowledge while sociocultural theory emphasizes social learning and shared construction of knowledge.
