Describe the five stages of second language acquisition

As with first language development, acquisition of another language takes timeāup to about 10 years. In general, English language learners progress through five stages of language development: pre-production, early production, speech emergence, intermediate fluency, and advanced fluency. In pre-production, learners may be silent and not produce much oral language. In early production, they may speak in one- or two-word phrases but have developed a large listening/speaking vocabulary. During speech emergence, learners may communicate in brief conversations, but grammatical mistakes are commonly evident. Students who show intermediate fluency have added words to their listening, speaking, reading, and writing vocabularies and use complex language structures. Those with advanced fluency have reached near native language ability.
