What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary but should include at least one or two of the following at each stage:
1. Birth to 5— discovering and coming to terms with exceptionality, obtaining an accurate diagnosis, informing siblings and relatives, locating early intervention services, participating in IFSP (individual family service plan) meetings, seeking to find meaning in the exceptionality, clarifying an ideology to guide decisions, addressing issues of stigma, identifying positive contributions of exceptionality, setting great expectations
2. Primary years—establishing routines to carry out family functions, adjusting emotionally to educational implications, clarifying issues of mainstreaming versus special class placement, advocating for inclusive experiences, participating in individual education plan (IEP) experiences, locating community resources, arranging for extracurricular activities, developing a vision for the future
3. Secondary school years—adjusting emotionally to possible chronicity of exceptionality, identifying issues of emerging sexuality, dealing with physical and emotional changes of puberty, addressing possible peer isolation and rejection, planning for career/vocational development, arranging for leisure activities, expanding the child’s self-determination
