Justify the use of a typewriter or keyboard for students who have severe fine motor problems or who write very slowly. Describe the benefits and limitations of typing or keyboarding

What will be an ideal response?

The use of typing and keyboarding could be an accommodation for students with fine motor or handwriting fluency difficulties.

BENEFITS OF TYPING/KEYBOARDING:

* simplified motor movements
* faster speed
* highest degree of legibility
* inherent motivation
* Also, ability to type facilitates the use of computers and word processing problems, and keyboarding is becoming a basic literacy skill because word processing is a standard method of writing.

LIMITATIONS:

* The downfall for younger students is that typing and keyboarding is actually slower than handwriting; development of keyboarding skills occurs about 2 years later than handwriting skills; students need explicit instruction in keyboarding to make effective use of this accommodation.
