ANSWER: In mitosis, each daughter cell receives two copies of each chromosome. Cells with two copies
of each chromosome are diploid (2n) and have 46 chromosomes. In meiosis, members of a
chromosome pair separate from each other, and each daughter cell receives a haploid (n) set
of 23 chromosomes. These haploid cells form gametes (sperm and egg). Fusion of two
haploid gametes in fertilization restores the chromosome number to the diploid number of 46,
providing a full set of genetic information to the fertilized egg.
