Significant evidence exists that older individuals are disproportionately impacted by environmental disasters. Why is this? Explain thoroughly. How can social workers help alleviate this impact?

What will be an ideal response?

Often, older individuals make up a majority of the victims of disasters. This happens for a variety of reasons, including the inability to quickly relocate, a reluctance to abandon one's home, and a high degree of isolation from community members, family, and/or a support network. Countries do not typically have policies or services specifically designed to meet the needs of older people in these scenarios. Social workers can help older people to establish emergency plans, establish nearby support networks in case they are needed, and know proper procedures to follow in evacuation situations.
