Compare the functions of roots with those of shoots. How are they similar and how are they different?
What will be an ideal response?
Both are involved in hormone production, support, and transport. Roots absorb water and minerals while consuming and/or storing carbohydrates, whereas shoots (including the leaves) consume water and minerals while producing carbohydrates.

Coenzymes function to
A. change the shape of enzymes, allowing different additional substrates to bind. B. dilate blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow, allowing more substrate to reach enzymes. C. interact directly with enzymes, either enabling the reaction to occur or making the substrate-enzyme interaction more efficient. D. denature the enzyme, stopping the chemical reaction from occurring. E. absorb excess hydrogen and hydroxide ions, keeping the pH relatively stable, so that reactions can occur most efficiently.
Scientists may compare similar genes in different species and determine what percentage of base pairs is identical. From this, it can be estimated how long ago the two species shared a common ancestor. The validity of this conclusion depends on an
important assumption. This assumption is that: A) all living things use the same genetic code. B) both species belong to the same kingdom. C) the gene codes for a functional protein. D) mutations occur at a fairly constant rate in all evolutionary lines.
Changes heritable traits in a population through multiple generations is called
A. Hereditary B. Mitosis C. Genotype D. Phenotype E. Evolution
