Sociobiology is a theoretical synthesis of biology, behavior, and evolutionary ecology that was introduced by Edward O. Wilson in 1975. Wilson demonstrated that certain forms of behavior (e.g., altruism), could contribute to the long-term survival of the social group. Wilson's main focus was to show that the key determinant of human behavior was the need to ensure the survival and continuity of genetic material from one generation to the next. He also emphasized the concept of territoriality, which he said explains a significant amount of human conflict and results in tribalism. Sociobiology has been heavily criticized by contemporary criminologists on a variety of grounds.
