Flow experiences are generally characterized by an intense concentration that allows a person to be-come completely absorbed by the activity while being distracted from any unpleasant aspects of life. Flow creates feelings of control and an absence of worry about losing control of one’s situation. Furthermore, our self-leadership skills can play an important role in these processes. For example, through self-observation of our behaviors and analysis of our thinking patterns, we can become more aware of how we might better utilize our signature strengths on a regular basis. Likewise, we can use self-goal-setting to create clear goals with immediate feedback that are integral to experiencing flow. The goals we set for ourselves should allow us to use our signature strengths and should be challenging enough to require intense concentration and cause us to utilize our fullest capacities in performing the tasks. Self-leadership would also suggest that we focus much of our effort on pursuing goals involving activities that we find naturally rewarding. Natural reward strategies can help us to enjoy the moment as well as the journey, finding happiness in both. Finally, engaging in positive self-talk, identifying and replacing irrational and dysfunctional beliefs, and mental practice can all lead to more optimistic and opportunistic thinking patterns, which in turn can put us in a healthier frame of mind that will better enable us to utilize our signature strengths and experience psychological flow.
