• Intermediate sanctions are sanctions that are more restrictive than probation and less restrictive than imprisonment.• Intermediate sanctions provide a number of additional sentencing options for wrongdoers who require stricter supervision than that supplied by probation, but for whom imprisonment would be unduly harsh and counterproductive.• Dozens of different variations of intermediate sanctions are handed down each year. Two general categories of such sanctions are those administered primarily by the courts (such as fines, community service, restitution, pretrial diversion, and forfeiture) and those administered primarily by corrections departments (including day reporting centers, intensive supervision probation, shock incarceration, and home confinement).?
