A student engages in several inappropriate and destructive behaviors. Discuss the procedures a teacher might
initiate to identify the functions of these behaviors.
What will be an ideal response?
Step 1: Identify the behaviors (operationally define). Discuss concerns with the IEP team.
Step 2: Conduct Screening, collecting any information such as medical etc that might impact the student's behavior (e.g., student has had a change in medication).
Step 3: Conduct a functional assessment. Collect indirect and direct data to help construct a possible hypothesis of the function of the behavior.
Step 4: If hypothesis is not clear, conduct a functional analysis to test the hypothesis or generate a clear hypothesis. If not familiar with functional analysis may have specialized teacher conduct.
Step 5: Develop a behavior support plan in which an intervention which serves the same function as the problem behavior is developed and implemented to replace the inappropriate behavior.
