The purpose of active listening is to engage the listener and demonstrate to the speaker that what is being spoken is truly being understood. There are six types of active listening: acknowledging, paraphrasing, reflecting, elaboration, and summarizing. (a) Acknowledging: tells the speaker you are listening through nonverbal and verbal comments; (b) Paraphrasing: provides feedback by repeating what was heard in the listeners’ own words; (c) Reflecting: sharing of feelings; (d) Clarifying: listener asks for more specifics to better understand; (e) Elaboration: listener asks the speaker for more information to broaden the conversation; (f) Summarizing: listener reiterates or recaps the conversation which provides closure.
