The first step in the Cooperative Learning model is for the teacher to introduce the task by providing an overview of the lesson, outline the student roles and responsibilities, and lists the tasks to be completed. The second step is for the teacher to name, teach, model, and have students practices targeted social skills for high quality group work . The third step is for students to implement the learning activities by using the available resources and drawing on help from peers and the teacher as needed. The fourth step is for the teacher to engage students in activities in which they summarize learning or attain closure in some other manner. The fifth step involves gauging individual and group progress related to the social learning goals for the lesson. The final step in the Cooperative Learning model is for the teacher to measure learning goals related to academic performance with a summative assessment that may involve traditional (i.e., test) or alternative (i.e., group performance) assessment measures.
