George E. P. Box was a chemist, born and raised in England. During WWII, Box served as a chemical weapons defense analyst who needed a new approach to analyze his research data. Unable to secure training in the statistical field, Box located a number of statistical textbooks and taught himself. From the classroom of WWII, Box became a leading authority on the statistical approach. After the war, George Box earned a Ph.D. in mathematics and statistics from University College in Great Britain. In 1960 he accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin and became the chair for the newly created statistics department. Box was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1946 and the Walter Shewhart Medal in 1968
