Discuss Goodpaster’s model of the development of organizational conscience.

What will be an ideal response?

Much like Piaget’s work on the development of moral reasoning in children, Goodpaster says that organizations first go through the stage of egocentrism in which they do not realize, or do not care, that they have negative impacts on others because they are solely focused on self interest. In the second stage, responding to external norms or constraints, organizations follow the letter of state or federal laws or professional codes of conduct to avoid penalties, but have not internalized the values behind the ethical guidelines. In the last stage of understanding of interdependence, organizations realize that their own self interests are intertwined with those of their customers, national economies, and the general public and pursue mutual benefit in their practices and policies.
