In August 1867, Roaming Leader, a member of the Skidi band of the Pawnee nation, on orders from his chief, led a scouting party to look for buffalo. The whole band—several dozen men, women, and children—had left its village of mud lodges in northwestern Nebraska two months earlier for the annual buffalo hunt.
