Why is the human papillomavirus (HPV) such a serious STI?

What will be an ideal response?

HPV is the most common STI in people of all ages, occurring in up to one half of adults ages 18-69. Some HPV types cause genital warts and are considered low risk, with a small chance for causing cancer. Other types, if untreated, can cause cancer in different areas of the body--most commonly cervical cancer in women. HPV vaccines are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for both males and females starting at age 11.
