In Holt v. Sarver, the court looked at conditions throughout the Arkansas prison system, including medical care, and created a test of cruel and unusual punishment within the Eighth Amendment. In Estelle v. Gamble, the Court prohibited "deliberate indifference," in that neither the medical staff in responding to needs, nor correctional staff in denying, interfering with, or delaying access to medical care can be deliberately indifferent to such needs without the unnecessary or wanton infliction of pain. And in Fernandez v. United States, the Court established that medical care in prisons must be "reasonably commensurate with modern medical science and of a quality acceptable within prudent professional standard.
