Tolkien uses actions to help the reader understand Gollum. After Gollum/Smeagol fights with himself over what to do about the Precious, he finally gives in to one of his selves and begins to reach for Frodo's throat. Either what he wants is on Frodo's neck or he plans to strangle Frodo (because he is a ‘Baggins'). This shows that the wicked self is winning the argument and he plans to do harm.
