Give some examples of activities involved in aesthetic reading. Then give examples for efferent reading. How might activities overlap?

What will be an ideal response?

Student answers will vary regarding which examples they give for each type.
Some examples of aesthetic reading: getting ?lost? in a story, being overcome with emotion, feeling pleasure or delight or feeling sad or worried based on the reading, wanting to visit the location or setting, wanting to see what happens next, comparing a character in a story to someone in real life, etc. Some examples of efferent reading: looking for information or processes in sets of directions, step-by-step instructions, lists, recipes, or how-to pieces, as well as much that is included in nonfiction books.

Text can be read both aesthetically or efferentally, so in this way the same type of activities may overlap. A reader may react emotionally to an idea or image in a nonfiction book, though the main purpose is to find information. And a reader may look for information or learn how to do something while reading a fiction piece, though the main purpose is to get involved in a story.
