Discuss why caring for your spiritual self is important as a counselor. How do you believe you will achieve this?

What will be an ideal response?

?Most agree that some degree of spirituality—broadly defined as nurturing an inner life and having a relationship with nature and the natural world, whether by prayer, meditation, or simply regular walks in the woods—is important for people’s psychological well-being.
?Some, and not only pastoral counselors, maintain that spirituality is the central aspect of ourselves as counselors that serves a healing function in the counseling relationship.
?Our ability to be fully present and centered with our clients, a skill that is best nurtured by way of some kind of spiritual practice, is key to successful relationship building. It is this spiritual side of us, this contemplation of our connection to the universe that shapes our values and our belief system.
?Furthermore, counselors who have examined their own spiritual questions will be in the best position to deal with their clients’ spiritual questions.
?Contemplating the order of things and our place within that order, as well as our relationship with nature, are wonderful ways to keep our sense of perspective and balance. This is the same balance we encourage our clients to seek.
