Describe the items of perioperative attire you will change into when you arrive at work in the operating suite. Provide a rationale for each piece of attire you wear
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
Remove all street clothes and change into scrub shirt and long scrub pants or dress as provided by your healthcare facility. A fresh set of clothing should be worn each day and changed during the day if soiling occurs from blood or body fluids.
Hair should be completely covered by disposable head scarf, balaclava or shower cap. If own scarf is worn to secure hair, it must be changed daily and worn over a disposable cover.
A long-sleeved warm-up jacket as provided by your facility should be worn. The sleeves may be pushed up past the wrist area when performing hand hygiene and when opening sterile supplies. If gowns are used for warmth, these should be worn tied at the back.
Jewellery is restricted to plain wedding band, plain stud earrings and neck chains if they are able to be contained within the scrub attire. Wrist watches must not be worn as these are seldom washed.
Footwear should be closed and non-slip providing protection against injury or exposure to bodily fluids. It should be of a material that can be cleaned. ‘Crocs' or similar footwear is not acceptable. Healthcare facilities may provide disposable/reusable overshoes.
