The increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be linked to four causes. First, birth control bills, which do not prevent STDs, replaced condoms as a preferred birth control method. Second, many people mistakenly believed that antibiotics could treat virtually any sexually transmitted disease (a belief that caused them to exercise less caution). Third, some people expanded their number of sexual partners, thereby increasing the odds of being infected. Finally, the popularity of oral sex contributed to the transmission of STDs, including HIV.
