What is assistive technology, what are its benefits, and what issues should be considered? (Note: discuss more than wheelchairs)

What will be an ideal response?

Simply put, it is any device, low-tech or high-tech, that can be used to make life easier for people with physical or other health impairments. It can be a device that improves mobility (like wheelchairs, walkers, and canes), or a device that assists with communication needs (AAC devices). Personal data assistants (PDAs), e-text books and other materials, and smart phones are all useful. Non-motorized wheelchairs have the advantage of fewer technical problems, but motorized wheelchairs are frequently used by people unable to operate manual chairs independently. Several things need to be considered when choosing a wheelchair, including: transportation issues (they are heavy and large); size (can they be maneuvered in desired settings); they require maintenance; the choice of how to operate it is important; and they can be hazardous
