According to culture researchers Trice and Beyer, there are three conditions that give rise to subcultures (1993, pp. 176-177). Please list and briefly define each
What will be an ideal response?
Differential interaction. Interacting with certain people more regularly than others
provides an opportunity for a subculture to develop. Separation by geographic location
(e.g., Midwest branch vs. Southern branch of an organization), department (marketing vs.
distribution), hierarchical level (vice president vs. regional manager), or union affiliation
(union vs. nonunion) leads to differential interaction between groups and, hence, the
possible development of subcultures.
Shared experiences. As people live and work with one another, they experience a
common reality and the problems associated with it. Over time, they develop shared
meanings for events, common solutions to regular problems, and similar mind-sets
regarding their environment. As the meanings, solutions, and mind-sets prove to be
useful in dealing with everyday life, a subculture develops.
Similar personal characteristics. Just as shared experiences may lead to the development
of a subculture, so may the sharing of personal characteristics such as age, race, sex,
gender, religion, social class, or education. According to Trice and Beyer, "Such
similarities encourage the formation of subcultural ideologies because members do not
need to displace their old beliefs and values very much to find common ground with one
another"
