How is a whole-class discussion activity different from a typical (e.g., direction instruction) lesson? What type of information is learned best through discussion?

What will be an ideal response?

What differentiates a whole-class discussion from a usual lesson is that in discussions the teacher plays a less dominant role. Teachers may guide the discussion and help the class avoid dead ends, but the ideas should be drawn from the students. A type of information that is well suited to discussion would be exploring points of view. A teacher does not have a specific principle in mind, but rather wants students to explore and develop their own ideas about a topic, using information they have learned.
