Students should demonstrate knowledge that the true experimental designs yield the most control, manipulate the independent variable, and use randomization to create equivalent groups. Quasi-experimental designs offer some control by pretesting participants into "nonequivalent groups" using matching, and that like pre-experimental designs can either manipulate or observe the independent variable. Finally, pre-experimental designs offer the least control. See pages 210 through 220 for an expanded comparison of these three designs.
