What will be an ideal response?


ANSWER: To be successful, a conservation plan must have support from the local people. They must
benefit in some way, often economically, from the preserve. Legislating preserves that
exclude or disenfranchise local people is not a good idea. Poaching and illegal harvesting of
resources are rampant in places where the locals are opposed to the conservation plan.
Ecotourism, or allowing limited extraction of resources from the preserve, is an option that
has been successful. Education of the local people about ecosystem services and

consequences of ecological degradation is valuable as well.
