Compare and contrast reference groups and primary groups.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Reference groups are collections of individuals with whom we identify, or look up to, and whose beliefs impact our individual decision-making. They have a powerful impact on what we think of ourselves; and our social judgments, are in large part understood through the eyes of others. Primary groups are characterized by face-to-face interactions including family, neighborhood, play groups of children, and groups of elders among others. In these groups there is an intimate fusion of the individual and group which is essential to forming participants’ ideals including developing ethical principles such as justice, service, and kindness.
