How does the equality rule support students to solve missing addend problems?

What will be an ideal response?

The students are taught to find the side of the equal sign that tells them how many they end with. The teacher points out that the sides are not equal until the students end with the same number on both sides of the equal sign. The teacher directs students to draw lines on the side of the equal sign with the missing addend so that the sides will be equal. The students then write the numeral for the missing addend and complete the equation.
