Victims of crime may suffer a wide variety of mental disorders as a result of their victimization. They are going through a process of attempting to regain their mental equilibrium that is off center as a result of the traumatic event. Depression is described as a major depressive episode lasting at least two weeks, during which there is either a depressed mood or the loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities. The essential feature of substance abuse is a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to significant adverse consequences related to the repeated use of substances. Since repeated use of substances in situations in which they are physically dangerous, legal problems related to the use of the substance, and social and inter-personal problems it is the most serious.
