Define the three sectors identified by the world systems perspective and give an example of each.
What will be an ideal response?
Under this perspective, the world is divided into three sectors: a core sector that dominates the capitalist world economy and exploits the world's resources, a peripheral sector that provides raw material to the core and is heavily exploited by it, and a semiperipheral sector that is somewhat independent but very vulnerable to the financial fluctuations of the core states. The core currently includes the United States, western Europe, and Japan; the periphery includes much of Africa, South Asia, and Latin America; and the semiperiphery includes such places as Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and oil-producing countries in the Middle East. According to the world systems perspective, the hegemony of the core sector is reinforced by neocolonial practices of such transnational institutions as the World Bank, the IMF, and the WTO.
