Trust can be built through honest, open, and consistent communication and interaction with families. Respect is built by being respectful, trustworthy, kind, honest, and reliable. Finally, commitment can be demonstrated through dependability and consistency and by doing what you say you are going to do. To assess whether these elements have been manifested in the professional–family relationship, we can use communication with and observation of the family. Practitioners can outright ask families how they feel about the provider and the services provided. If this isn't feasible, observations of how the family interacts with the provider can demonstrate whether trust, respect, and commitment exists. If a family, for example, doesn't trust what the practitioner says or does, or if families have no desire to engage with the practitioner, then these elements have most likely not been achieved.
