ANS: Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas was a Supreme Court case resulting in a ruling that separate schools for whites and blacks were inherently unequal; eliminated segregation. The Bilingual Education Acts of 1968 and 1974 provided funding for school districts to establish programs for large numbers of children with limited English-language skills. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 was an extensive federal funding initiative focused on improving the education of students. Of particular interest is Title I, which provides funding for compensatory education for disadvantages students. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is a revision and a renaming of the former that requires states to develop content-area standards and annual testing of math and reading skills in certain grades; it also provide for greater parental choice in terms of schools. Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a federal law guaranteeing all children with disabilities a free appropriate public education.
