Prior to 1800, the largest number of immigrants were from Europe and the involuntary movement of slaves from Africa. In the period after 1800, more than three-quarters of immigrants to the Western Hemisphere came from five areas: the British Isles, Italy, Austria–Hungary, Germany, and Spain. The United States received 60% of those. More recently, immigration from Asian and Spanish-speaking countries has been on the rise in the United States.
