Compare and contrast the four types of speech presentations: memorized, impromptu, manuscript, and extemporaneous. Which one is rarely recommended? Very challenging but worth trying? Offers control but not spontaneity? Is appropriate for just about any occasion?
What will be an ideal response?
The four methods of delivery are as follows: 1) The memorized speech – an oral presentation or recital after committing to memory the entire text, word for word. It is not recommended because speakers can’t adjust for audience feedback, and they risk losing track and forgetting the speech. 2) The impromptu speech – a series of off-the-cuff remarks on the spot, with little or no preparation. It is very difficult and challenging, but offers great training in organizing and expressing thoughts. 3) The manuscript speech – a printed text read aloud, exactly as planned. It gives precise control over wording and timing, but makes it difficult to sound natural and spontaneous. 4) The extemporaneous speech – a detailed outline referred to while creating the actual wording at the moment of delivery. It is very conversational and open to ongoing audience feedback, so it is appropriate for just about any occasion.
