Describe the controversy involved in integrating curriculum. What does research indicate about the effectiveness of integrating curriculum (compared to not integrating curriculum) for increasing student learning?
What will be an ideal response?
Proponents of curriculum integration argue that integrating the curriculum increases the relevance of content for students, improves achievement, and promotes collaborative planning. Opponents argue that integrating curriculum results in a de-emphasis on some important concepts, since teachers don't have a deep understanding of all the content areas that are to be integrated, and planning and instruction for integrating curriculum are very time consuming. The results with respect to learning are uncertain, with some research suggesting that learning is increased, and other research finding either no benefits and in some cases negative results.
