1. After installing each piston, rotate the crank one complete turn to check for unacceptable resistance. You need to catch a problem when it occurs.
2. On V-type engines, check the side clearance between the connecting rods with a feeler gauge and compare it to specifications. Use the low side of the tolerance when selecting a feeler gauge. Check at two or three locations around the circumference of the rod. Variations in clearance indicate a bent or twisted rod.
