Explain and give an example of one reason why it is important to study and learn about computer-mediated communication

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary based on the reason chosen, but students should identify and give an example of one of the three reasons below.

1. CMC is a pervasive form of communication. This means that most people use CMC constantly. For example, we see students on campus carrying laptops, listening to iPods, and text messaging as they walk.

2. CMC has been adopted more rapidly than any other communication technology. This means that CMC's popularity has grown very quickly, which we can see when we compare our generation's technology use to that of our parents—or even grandparents.

3. CMC impacts multiple daily activities. Most people use CMC for four reasons: 1) to exchange e-mails and instant messages, 2) to entertain themselves, 3) to make financial transactions, and 4) to seek and exchange information. Examples of each, respectively, include: 1) checking and sending e-mail to family, 2) playing fantasy sports online or playing games, 3) checking account balances and transferring money, and 4) doing research for a school project.
