Identify and explain the three internal dialectics. Give an example to illustrate both sides of each pole.

What will be an ideal response?

According to the dialectical perspective, partners continually fluctuate between
each end of three tensions. These are known as internal dialectics. The
autonomy–connection dialectic refers to the friction between wanting to feel connected
to one’s partner versus wanting to maintain some independence. The
openness–closedness dialectic includes the tension between wanting to open up and
self-disclose while also wanting to maintain privacy. The predictability–novelty dialectic
recognizes the pull between wanting stability or steadiness while also wanting
opportunities for spontaneity. Examples will vary by student but should clearly show the
tension between each side of each dialectic.
