What does the research reveal about the effects of unions, both positive and negative?
What will be an ideal response?
The many provisions of a union contract result in measurable change for employees. For example, wages, health insurance, pensions, and other employee benefits are typically better under union contracts. Union contracts protect seniority rights, and increase the likelihood of just cause discipline and discharge. Grievance procedures ensure employees receive due process. As a result, unionized companies typically have lower job turnover. Unionized workers are no more, or less, likely to be satisfied in their job once working conditions and climate are taken into consideration. Finally, while there is mixed evidence as to the effects of unions on job productivity, unionized firms are generally less profitable as a greater portion of profits is shared with the workers in the form of better wages and working conditions.
