Earth berms built up on the side of a home that faces the prevailing wind. A berm produces a lift in the wind that
creates slower-moving, swirling air below, thus reducing its effect on the home.
Walls and fences, solid or slotted to allow passage of air through them, break up wind and slow its velocity in the
area immediately downwind, again benefiting the home beyond them.
Dense foliage bushes or trees planted in a row also slow the wind and deflect some of its force. They can be planted
on top of a berm to increase their effect or along a wall or fence.
Outbuildings such as workshops, detached garages, storage sheds, etc., if they can be placed between the home and
the prevailing wind direction, are effective in splitting a wind stream to go around or over the home.
