? ? Denial: a way to cope with the new information that their baby has a disability; may continue to look for and expect cures when none exist
? ? Anxiety: constant concern for the child affects family system; medical care and testing may be overwhelming and bring extreme pressure
? ? Guilt: a feeling that they did something wrong and why it is their fault
? ? Depression: dealing with the reality of the situation seems like a shattered dream; sadness about loss
? ? Anger: blaming others although there is no logical place to direct feelings of anger
? ? Acceptance: comes about when professionals and family accept the situation and the child; focus is now on the child’s gains instead of the parents’ loss
