Why do people want to over-provide food for their guests or family when they know that others don't have enough food?
America is considered the land of plenty and that attitude prevails here amongst many consumers. People in other developed countries have access to a safe and abundant food supply as well. No one wants to not have enough food for their family or friends so they tend to buy more than they need. Also, many fruits and vegetables are sold as getting three for a dollar, etc. This entices people to buy more than they actually need. Other answers are possible as well.
