Discuss the nomenclature of the HLA alleles
What will be an ideal response
Initially, the HLA A and B genes were numbered sequentially as they were discovered (e.g., HLA B2 ). Newly
discovered genes were given the provisional designation "w" until it was certain that the discoveries were genuine
(e.g., HLA Bw2 ). To prevent confusion between the HLA complement genes and the HLA C genes, the "w"
designation was permanently given to all HLA C genes. As typing methods became more sophisticated, the
specificities of different alleles become more defined, and epitopes shared by different alleles were identified. Some
previously identified allele epitopes were characterized as "splits" when two or more individual epitopes were
found to be components of the original epitopes. This means that related epitopes may not be numbered
consecutively and that ever more sophisticated nomenclature for the alleles is developing.
