Explain the pros and cons of drug therapy for treatment of ADHD

What will be an ideal response?

Explain the pros and cons of medication for treatment of ADHD.

Answers will vary but should contain some of the following points that are outlined on pages 362-363 of the textbook:
• Pros: Review of controlled studies show symptom reduction in 65-75% of school-age students in the short term; positive response include a reduction in hyperactivity, increased attention and time on task, increased academic productivity, and improved conduct; teachers/parents can take advantage of symptom reduction to teach behavioral interventions; based on meta-analysis, some researchers suggest it is unwise and could be considered malpractice not to include drug therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment program for children with ADHD
• Cons: Side effects are significant; parents/teachers might be content with symptom reduction and not teach appropriate behaviors; no clear evidence indicates stimulant medication lead to improved academic achievement
