Would UCU serve its members better if it concentrated solely on their interests, rather consider students, employers, government and society more generally?

What will be an ideal response?

The fundamental question for UCU is to define precisely what its members’ interests are. Up to the
present is has evidently decided on a relatively inclusive definition, at least for external
consumption. The problem for UCU in an economically hostile environment is that to focus on a
narrower, overly self-interested definition would expose it to accusations of selfishness, even
unethicality. However, as students increasingly become consumers of the costly services provided
by UCU members, the union may have no choice but to refocus on the interests of the stakeholder
group(s) most central to its mission. Arguably, it stands to gain more from forging alliances with
student unions and other interest groups (including parents) than with employers and government
agencies. Such ‘political’ judgements will be crucial to its future effectiveness.
